Outdoor adventures and entertainment in Bangor, exploring trails and online casinos

Tourism in Northern Ireland has experienced a huge resurgence over the last decade. Although most of the news and attention is focused on the bigger cities, Bangor has flown under the radar and offers something fresh, new and inviting compared to the hustle and bustle of the big towns.

There’s plenty to do in Bangor – and we genuinely believe there’s something for everyone, with beach walks and outdoor trails that rival any of the coastal walks in the UK, and a range of sporting entertainment that offers something interesting, too.

We will touch on the activities that make Bangor such an attractive tourist destination in 2024, and explore some ideas that could continue pushing this trend upwards as we head toward the 2030s.

The market for online casinos in Northern Ireland

Online casinos are another sector spiking in Northern Ireland. This is unrelated to tourism, given that there are no land-based casinos in NI. There has been a surge in new online casinos, and citizens in Northern Ireland are seeking out what they offer.

With online gaming gaining popularity, platforms like Irishluck.ie have emerged to rank and review top new online casinos providers. These review sites offer a streamlined way for players in Northern Ireland to assess and compare different platforms, including factors like bonuses, game selection, payment options, and mobile compatibility. By offering detailed insights, sites like the one mentioned above help players find platforms tailored to their preferences, cutting through the overwhelming variety of choices and simplifying the search for trustworthy and engaging online casinos. The rapid emergence of new online casinos means that players can always find fresh options to explore and enjoy.

As the online casino market continues to grow in the UK, Northern Ireland bettors are exploring a growing number of online gaming platforms. Review sites that collate the top new providers based on various criteria can save players time and effort when looking for somewhere new to play a few casino games.

Bangor to Groomsport coastal path

If you’re more interested in Bangor’s walks and trails, there are many coastal paths to check out. While these paths can be particularly chilly in the latter part of the year, over the summer, they offer some of the most scenic views you can find anywhere in the county.

The route itself starts near the Eisenhower Pier in the bay. Although some might argue that it’s better to start the walk nearer to Helen’s Bay and approach from the opposite direction, the walking guide to Groomsport helps to come to the conclusion that it’s better to start from Bangor.

The three-mile walk covers Ballyholme Beach and Ballymacormick Point, and if you start at the pier, you get a great view of the town before you set off on your trip – and more importantly, there’s free parking!

Castle Park

If the prospect of a cool sea breeze is a little unattractive at this time of year, you can always venture further inland and check out Castle Park. In our view, if you’re going to go to Castle Park, then you’re best starting with it and moving toward attractions that are within a manageable distance of it.

Although Castle Park is picturesque, if you embark on this walk early enough and give yourself plenty of time (and weather permitting), you’ll be able to take a look at Bangor Abbey, the Victorian Walled Garden and the North Down Museum, which provides a phenomenal insight into the history of the town, dating all the way back to 500 BC.

Path to Holywood

If the walk to Groomsport got you excited about the idea of another outdoor adventure in Bangor, then the path to Holywood is another one we’d recommend ticking off your list. The walk itself clocks in at just over eight miles, so we’d also recommend reserving a day to take this all in; while you don’t need to cover all of the sites on the list, there are some great places to stop and explore along the way, including:

  • ● Wilson’s Point
  • ● Brompton Bay
  • ● Smelt Mill Bay
  • ● Swineley Bay
  • ● Crawfordsburn Country Park
  • ● Seahill
  • ● Cultra

The Bangor to Holywood coastal path is just as enticing and captivating as the Groomsport coastal walk, encompassing the natural beauty of some of Northern Ireland’s most magical hidden adventures and scenery. If you have a penchant for trails and outdoor adventures, this path will give you the best feel for what this part of the country is about.

Entertainment in Bangor

With such a buzz about Northern Ireland tourism at the moment, an increasing number of people are visiting to check out some of the entertainment on offer in the city. As the number of tourists continues to swell, including a huge surge in the number of tourists travelling up from the Republic of Ireland, more entertainment venues are looking to adapt to try and turn these numbers into profit.

Eddie Irvine is one of Bangor’s most famous sons. A charismatic media personality during his time in Formula One, he has invested his money wisely in retirement. His indoor racing centre, which features a go-kart track, is one of the highest-rated entertainment spots in Bangor and attracts both locals and tourists all year around.

Other sports entertainment venues include a couple of highly-rated golf courses and an indoor activity centre called Airtastic, which offers bowling and laser tag.

Final thoughts

For a city with a population of just over 60,000, Bangor continues to punch above its weight from a tourism perspective. While tourists – especially international tourists – will focus their trip to Northern Ireland almost solely on Belfast, many don’t realise that they’re missing out on some of the most beautiful and scenic coastlines anywhere in the country.

Granted, it’s definitely ideal in the summer months rather than in the depths of winter, but there’s a reason why the number of people travelling to Bangor continues to increase and why the tourist industry is thriving in 2024.

One of the many positives about beach walks is that they’re cost-effective and cover a number of intriguing spots along the way – especially the Holywood path. As long as you make the proper preparations and adjustments, whether you’re going for a coastal walk on a cold, windy day or a beautiful summer’s day, you will not be disappointed by what Bangor has to offer.
